Our Story
What started with loss became a space for connection.
After losing their father to a drunk driver in 2019, siblings Raina and Cole McCarter experienced firsthand how isolating grief can feel, especially as young people. They were both in elementary school at the time, just 9 and 7 years old. While surrounded by others, there were few spaces where they could truly connect with peers who understood what they were going through.
Over time, that experience became something more than just personal. It became a purpose. As Raina moved through her middle school years, she began to recognize that many other kids and teens were navigating the same loss without a place to feel seen, heard, or understood.
In November 2025, she took the first step by bringing together a small group of teens who had also lost a parent. What began as a simple gathering quickly revealed the power of connection.
From that moment, B.R.A.V.E. (Building Resilience After Very Difficult Experiences) was created. Its purpose is to build a community rooted in support, understanding, and healing for kids and teens who have lost a parent.
